Professor Dr. Mohammad Gias Uddin Talukder was born in the traditional house of Bangaji in Lalanagar village of Rangunia Upazila of Chittagong district. His father, Dr. Moslem Uddin Talukder, was both a government primary school teacher and a renowned homeopathic physician.
He started his early education at Alam Shah Para Kamil Madrasa. In this madrasa, he studied from children’s class to Kamil. At various levels of madrasa education, he had a brilliant signature of merit. In the Alim examination of 1974 under the Bangladesh Madrasa Board, he got 3rd place in the combined merit list, and in the Kamil (Tafsir) examination of 1989, he got 1st place in 1st class.
Then in 1991, he was admitted to King Saud University in Riyadh to study for a higher diploma and teacher training in Arabic language and Islamic culture with a scholarship from the Saudi government. After studying in that course for 4 long years, he returned to the country and obtained a master’s degree from the Arabic department of Chittagong University with first place in the first class. He later received his Ph.D. from the same university, studying the miraculous teachings of the Qur’an.
Professor Gias Talukder joined Rangunia Alam Shah Para Kamil Madrasa as a lecturer soon after the Kamil examination. But he did not stay in the post as he went to Saudi Arabia with a government scholarship to pursue higher education. He later returned to the country and joined the madrasa as the chief commentator.
In 1995, he was appointed as the first lecturer in the Department of Quranic Science and Islamic Studies, International Islamic University, Chittagong. He later became the director of the Institute of Modern Arabic Language at the university. For 11 long years, he held various posts in the university and was awarded various ranks. He joined the Department of Arabic at the University of Chittagong in 2006 and is currently working as a Professor in that Department.
Deen in invitation and service :
• From his student life he was involved in various da’wah activities. While studying at Fazil, he used to deliver and lead Friday sermons in the absence of local khatibs and imams. From that time onwards he used to play the role of negotiator in various waz mahfils and religious discussions. He was the Khatib of Chittagong Medical College Hostel Mosque from 1995 to 2006. Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) has been serving as Khatib in the mosque since 2006. From 1995 to 2002, he regularly spoke on various religious programs on Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and Channel I.
• From 2001 to 2010, Rangunia Alam Shahpara served as the Chairman of the Kamil Madrasa Management Committee. He conducted recitation of the Holy Quran and Doa Munajat on several occasions of Hon’ble Prime Minister Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina.
• He has been imparting proper religious training and tarbiyyah to thousands of pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah every year from his Bangladesh Hajj Baitullah. He is holding the post of Chairman of Shariah Committee of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited, First Security Islami Bank Limited, NRB Global Bank. He is also a member of the Shariah Board of Bangladesh Bank and Chairman of the Shariah Council of Northern Islamic Life Insurance.
• On the eve of the Friday sermon and other discussions, he presented various national and international issues in an interesting and heartwarming presentation style in the light of the Quran, Sunnah, and modernity. He also encouraged patriotism and Islamic discipline in his discussions.
Intellectual contribution and going abroad :
His articles have been published in various research journals in the United States, United Kingdom, Africa, India, and other countries, where his thoughts and research are different. He has been honored by presenting research papers in various academic conferences and seminars in different countries including Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Turkey, Lebanon, Japan. He has also graced the chair of the academic session of multiple conferences. He has traveled to many world-renowned universities and countries for participation in conferences and seminars, academic needs, or for various reasons. Notable universities he has visited include Oxford and Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, Al-Azhar and Cairo University in Egypt, American University Beirut in Lebanon, American University Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, International Islamic University in Malaysia, Kedah Sultan Abdul Halim Muazzam Shah Islamic University in Japan. Osaka University, King Saud of Saudi Arabia, Umm al-Qura, and the Islamic University of Madina.
